1953 LAND ROVER DISCOVERED IN DAILY COMMERCIAL USE

While staying at the Cunnington Lodge at Port Cunnington, Lake of Bays, Ontario, TARC member and former Chairman Piers Hemmingsen discovered this 1953 Series I Land Rover in daily use in the boat repair yard across the road from the Lodge.

1953 Series I

Used to move boats around the yard, the Land Rover sports the following features:

  • no doors
  • bucket seats (from a '65 Mustang?)
  • front hitch for moving boat trailers
  • steering wheel from a 1970s North American muscle car
  • rear lights that look to be from Canadian Tire.
The body is in excellent shape and is painted grey.

Piers asked Chris Winger, the owner of the boatyard, if he could take a snapshot for the club newsletter and website, and he agreed. Chris stated that he has owned this vehicle for the last 15 years and it is in daily service. Talk about a work record .... 46 years!

As far Chris knows, this LR has been in the area all its life. It may have been used at the Lodge across the road at some time.

Does anyone know more of the history of this unique vehicle? Is this the oldest known Land Rover in daily use in Canada?

Please direct all replies to Piers Hemmingsen, hemmings@cibc.ca.
